As someone who runs a high quality machining service, I get asked this question all the time: “Does a top-tier machining service actually have a proper quality management system (QMS) in place?” High Quality Machining Service

Let me cut to the chase—yeah, they do. If they don’t, they’re not actually top-tier. And for the record, I’m not talking about some generic binder full of rules no one follows. I’m talking about a system that’s woven into every single step of the process, from the second a customer’s drawing lands in our inbox to the day the part ships out their door.

Let’s start with the part most people don’t see: pre-production checks. A lot of shops jump straight to pressing the “run” button on their CNC machines because they want to get parts out fast. But we slow down here. First, our quality team doesn’t just look at the drawing once—they go line by line. They check for tolerances that might be too tight for the material the customer specified, or a dimension that doesn’t make sense with the part’s purpose. Last month, a customer sent us a drawing for a custom aerospace bracket that listed a 0.001” tolerance on a steel section that was going to be welded later. That’s overkill, right? Welding shrinks metal, so a tolerance that tight would have made the part impossible to assemble. Our quality team flagged that before we even cut a single piece, saved them time and money, and they ended up choosing us instead of another shop that would have just run the part as requested. That’s the QMS working, not just checking boxes.

Then there’s the machine setup. You’d be surprised how many machinists skip a quick verification step if they’re in a rush. We have a rule: every new setup gets a test cut first. It’s not just a random piece of scrap, either—we use the same material the customer ordered, same tooling, same feeds and speeds. Then we measure that test piece with a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), not just a caliper. CMMs don’t lie—they measure multiple points, so we can catch if the machine is slightly out of alignment before we waste an hour cutting a part that’s off. I’ve seen shops ship parts because they “looked fine,” only to get a panicked call a week later when the part failed on the assembly line. Our QMS means that never happens here.

Speaking of measurements, in-process checks are non-negotiable. When a part has multiple complex features, we don’t wait until it’s fully machined to check each one. Halfway through the job, we stop, pull it off the machine, and verify that a bore is the right size, or a slot is in the correct position. Last quarter, we were running a batch of medical device screws, and during the in-process check, we noticed the thread pitch was 0.0002” off the drawing. Not a huge number, but enough that the screw wouldn’t seal properly. We caught it before we made all 500 screws—saved our customer from a recall, and saved us from a huge loss of time and material. That’s what a QMS does: it stops problems early, not after they’re already big.

Now, don’t think this is all just for new or small jobs. We do work with some pretty big companies, and their own auditors are always on our floor. They don’t just look at the final parts—they ask for records of every check we did. Our QMS keeps track of that automatically. Every test cut measurement, every in-process check, every final inspection—all logged in the system, tied to the specific job. If a customer asks, we can pull that up in two clicks. I’ve heard horror stories of shops that have to dig through paper folders to find that info, or worse, can’t find it at all. That’s not a quality service. That’s flying by the seat of your pants, and no one wants to work with a shop that does that when they’re making parts that go into planes or medical devices or machinery that could hurt someone if it’s wrong.

Wait, but what about when something does go wrong? No system is perfect, right? Our QMS has a specific process for that too. If a part is off, or a machine is acting up, we don’t just throw it away and pretend it never happened. We do a root cause analysis. Last year, we had a batch of aluminum parts that came out with a small surface blemish. Instead of tossing them, our team figured out it was because the tool holder wasn’t being cleaned properly between jobs. We added a mandatory step in our setup checklist: every tool holder gets wiped down with isopropyl alcohol before use. No more blemishes, and we improved our overall yield by 3% that month. That’s how a QMS evolves—it’s not set-it-and-forget-it; it’s a cycle of checking, fixing, and getting better every time.

A lot of people think QMS is just for big, corporate shops that charge way too much. Let’s get real: if you’re a small to mid-sized high quality machining service, a QMS is what sets you apart from the cut-rate shops that undercharge and deliver junk. Those shops don’t have the processes to catch mistakes, because they’re too busy cutting corners to stay competitive. We’re not the cheapest, but our customers know they’re getting parts that fit right, every time, and if there’s a problem (which is rare), we fix it fast because our system is set up to handle that.

Another big part: training. Our QMS doesn’t work if the people running it don’t know what they’re doing. Every machinist and quality tech here goes through regular training—not just on how to use the machines, but on the quality processes. We do monthly refreshers on tolerance interpretation, CMM operation, and root cause analysis. Last month, we had a new hire who was confused about how to measure a custom feature. Instead of letting them mess up a job, our lead quality tech pulled them aside, walked them through the QMS steps, and they were good to go by the end of the week. That investment in people is part of the QMS, too. It’s not just forms and machines—it’s making sure everyone on the team knows their job and how to do it right.

Let’s circle back to the original question: does high quality machining have a QMS? If it doesn’t, it’s not high quality. It’s a bunch of guys with CNC machines who can make parts, but not consistent, reliable parts. And consistency is what quality machining is all about. You can have one perfect part, but if the next 10 are off, that’s useless. Our QMS ensures that every part we make meets the same standards, no matter when we make it, how many we make, or who’s running the machine that day.

If you’re in the market for a machining service, don’t be afraid to ask about their quality processes. Ask if they do test cuts, in-process checks, or have records of inspections. Anyone worth their salt will be happy to walk you through it, because that’s part of showing you their QMS works. We do that all the time—we’ll bring customers down to our floor, show them our CMMs, our checklists, our job logs. Because we’re proud of what we do, and we know our system is why our customers come back, quarter after quarter.

At the end of the day, a QMS isn’t a buzzword. It’s the reason you don’t have to rework a part that should fit, or wait an extra week because a shop messed up your order, or deal with a part that fails when it matters most. For us, it’s non-negotiable. It’s what makes us a high quality machining service, not just a machining service.

If you’re looking for a partner that actually has their quality processes locked in, no shortcuts, no hidden surprises—reach out to us. We’re here to walk through your project, answer all your questions, and make sure your parts are exactly what you need. Don’t settle for a shop that says they do quality. Work with one that proves it, every step of the way.

Casting Part Machining References:

American Society for Quality.
